...Dried Sour Cherries!

This week I'm loving Dried Sour Cherries, which are available in the dried fruit section in Dunnes Stores. They are so nice to nibble on, and are fantastic in recipes!

This week I've been using them to make the most luxurious scones!

Orange and Cherry Scones - As suggested by Nigella Lawson in Domestic Goddess
(Makes ten)

500g Plain flour

2 teaspoons bicarb

Pinch salt

4 and a half teaspoons cream of tartar

75g unsalted butter diced

300ml milk

100gms dried sour cherries (or raisins if you prefer)

zest of 1 orange

Caster sugar for sprinkling.

Preheat oven to 200c. Sift the flour, bicarb, cream of tartar and salt. Rub in the shortening until it resembles sand. Add the fruit and the zest. Make a well and pour in the milk, and stir together. Flour a surface and turn out the dough. Roll out with a well floured pin to about an inch thick. Cut into about 10 round scones. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar if you like a crispy top.

Bake for about 15 minutes until golden brown (I often turn mine upside down for the last 5)

Eat with copious amounts of tea, sliced in two with cream and jam or honey.

As you can see... I couldn't decide... Jam or honey, honey or jam... so I had one of each!!

I miss scones! I use to know which cafes in Cork, Sligo and Dublin did the best scone and where to stop on the road between each of those towns for the best scone. I never had luck making them, but a nice scone would always be my treat of choice, if I was meeting a friend for afternoon tea. Chocolate cake sounds great but it could never satisfy me like a good scone could.

emma, ciara will tell you i have served her some rotten scones - ones that tasted like bath salts, ones like rocks... disasters! then i started making the nigella Lilys scones recipe where the trick is to use cream of tartar but also to cut them REALLY thick... they work every time, try them!

i agree with you, chocolate cake is a poor mans scone.. (and a fat mans scone at that!)

I don't think I have ever tried sour cherries before. Are they anything like dried cranberries? I love cranberry scones and chranberry oatmeal cookies.

they are more sour than the tart of a cranberry but would do just as well. The nice part about sour cherries in scones is the size of them!

I much prefer the sour cherries or cranberries to raisins. Not a big fan of the raisin. Looks good! What kind of cream do you use?

I can't believe you are from california and don't like raisins!! would that be like me not liking potatoes! I do like raisins but the sour cherries have a bit more oomph!
thats just double cream - although I would prefer it to have been "extra thick channel island double cream" - oh my god!

Well I don't pick out raisins if they are there. But actually I don't know many people who are too too fond of them. Maybe as it was always the tag-along snack as a kid??? Who knows! I prefer my grapes to sit in barrels and fermented.

Me too! grapes taste best when squashed by feet! I really like raisins, only I had never thought about it until now when I had a think about it! I do like them, especially big fat californian raisins peeping out of a bread and butter pudding...!
